CHAPTER 14: Glick
âGo away. Iâm sleeping.â Glick slapped at the hand on his shoulder.
âThe lights are off.â Bumpers shook him harder. âThe Almighty and Guards just left. We have to go.â
âWhere?â Glick sat up, blinking. Heâd been having a wonderful dream. Thereâd been food, a lot of it, and heâd been face first in the flesh, filling his belly.
âWe need to go to the other side of the cage.â
âBut the water. The soil.â He held up his hand with the missing finger. He didnât want to go anywhere but back to sleep.
âWeâll move from bush to bush.â Bumpers glanced at Flea who was still curled up sleeping. âWe have to find food.â
âOkay.â Glick stood. Bumpers was right. Theyâd all starve if they didnât find something soon. He dropped down to a lower branch.
âNot that way.â Bumpers moved upward through the foliage.
âWhy are we going up?â Glick followed.
âYouâll see.â Bumpers continued climbing.
When they were at the top, Bumpers stopped. Glick stood next to him, staring out over the enclosure. It was vastâbigger than it looked from below. There was no movement, no green, nothing but dark dirt and dead plants.
âItâs going to take forever to build a trail to the other side.â
âWeâre not building a path of leaves. Weâre going to use the bushes.â
âTheyâre all dead.â
âNot those.â Bumpers grabbed Glickâs head and turned him. âThe ones on the perimeter.â
âThey donât look much better than those.â Glick pointed to the ones in the center of the cage.
âSure they do.â
âIâm not seeing it.â
âLook closer. Thereâs green on some of them. Not much, but even a little means theyâre alive.â
Glick squinted. âHmm. I donât know.â The bushes still looked dead to him.
âWe need to get inside that other enclosure. Itâs our only chance.â
âItâs too far.â It was all the way on the other side and everything between here and there would kill them.
âWe have to try.â Bumpers moved behind Glick, turning his friend so he couldnât help but peer into the other enclosure. âLook at all that food.â
The other cage was over flowing with vegetation. There were flies and bees zipping about, begging to be caught and eaten.
âWhy do you think weâre in here instead of there?â he asked.
âDonât know. A mistake. Maybe, this cage was dying so the Almighty moved the other ones but didnât know about the eggs.â
That kind of made sense, but...âWhy did the Guards kill us?â
âDonât know, but if we can find a way to get inside with the others weâll be safe. Fed and safe.â
The Brush-Men moved about, catching bugs and picking at the remains of the carcasses from earlier today. They traveled in small groups but seemed to stay with those their own size.
âYou really think weâd be safe in there?â He didnât like the way the others looked at them.
âYeah, why wouldnât we be?â
âThey look hungry.â Heâd swear when heâd screamed theyâd been searching for him to hunt, not to help.
âYeah, but weâre their kind.â
âRocky and the others were like us.â
âThat was different. If Rocky and the others hadnât died we wouldnât have eaten them.
